Created by SCAPA, a Ghanaian-British musician based in Manchester, Nsɛbɛ is the inception of an exciting new Afro-Electro genre, presenting a collaborative body of work in spatial audio, with projected visuals at an afternoon listening party.
Nsɛbɛ is an Akan word that translates to talisman, an object or person regarded as representing a particular group. In this instance nsɛbɛ honours a new wave of music from Ghanaians, be it from diaspora or natives.
Featuring production from Cyril Shey, VALiD, A Nice Name and SCAPA, each track will be accompanied by snippets of interviews, recordings of Accra soundscapes and stories. Presented with Echo Chamber Liverpool, who will be installing a 12 speaker spatial audio system, this will be a one of a kind listening experience unlike anything else in Manchester.
Each featured artist met by chance at Freedom Skatepark. Coming together with a love for Wondagurl, production, engineering and skating, the dedicated music studio at the park gave the group a space to create something new, yet rooted in all their influences - be it trap, alté, electro, drill or highlife.
Accompanying projected visuals, photos and posters depicting Freedom Skatepark will allow audiences to immerse themselves in the space the music was incepted before and after the event.
Nsɛbɛ is a movement encouraging us to belong to different aspects of our identities as opposed to being fractions, open to diaspora from all cultures, as well as those with a singular heritage.
“I’m eager to further develop this sound with all its different cultural influences and learn how to present my work using cross-discipline means. It has been very important for me to forge this blended creative lane, celebrating both sides of my culture, and I would like to empower others to feel the same. This project will allow me to take aspects of both cities, my greatest influences, and put that into the work in a way that has never been seen before.”
